Season's Greetings Friend,

It was nice to see over 100 community members and supporters at this year’s Winter Gathering. A huge thank you to everyone who supported the event, auction, and to our in-kind supporters.

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to reflect, celebrate, and continue to take action to protect what you love about West Marin.

As I reflect on a challenging year for our environment and communities, with devastating federal administration rollbacks and cuts, I am reminded of the importance of being compassionate towards each other and our environment, even despite differences of opinion. I would like to take a moment to honor the late Dr. Jane Goodall with her quote, "If we all get together, we can truly make a difference, but we must act now." I am inspired by how our membership and the environmental community come together.

As we look forward, in 2026, we will be celebrating three anniversaries: EAC’s 55th anniversary, marking over five decades of advocacy for West Marin, the California Coastal Act’s 50th anniversary, and the 17th Annual Point Reyes Birding & Nature Festival (festival news), all of which help us safeguard our coast and ocean, and defend public lands in Marin County.

As we mark these anniversaries, your charitable support and volunteerism will be a commitment to California’s coastal legacy.

To that end, we are expanding our team by hiring a part-time Major Gifts Director, who will help grow our capacity and ability to protect the places you love. As you know, our shared natural treasures are under constant threat. Rising sea levels, extreme weather, habitat destruction, limited funding, and weakening environmental protections jeopardize the future of the coast. As the late Peter Douglas, former Executive Director of the California Coastal Commission, once said: “The coast is never saved. It’s always being saved.” This has never been more relevant.

Advocacy work doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time, persistence, and expertise—countless hours spent reviewing legislation, drafting public comments, meeting with local and state officials, and standing up for our coast every step of the way. Over half of our annual revenue comes from direct contributions from individuals like you—making your support essential to everything we do. View how members have contributed to real, measurable protection for nearly 55 years and learn about initiatives we will be taking in the new year.

January brings new ways to get involved in stewarding our shared coasttake our anonymous survey to help us plan, become a Duxbury Docent to educate and inspire, attend a Bay Area People’s Hearing to voice your opposition to offshore oil, or send us an email to express interest in guiding for our festival in April. Learn more about how to become an advocate for your local waterways with our Community Water Advocacy Guide, and read below to support our partners.

In gratitude,

P.S. Help us meet our year-end goals by making a donation or renewing your membership to help us keep California’s coast thriving. Or, shop our Advocate Store before December 31st for your last chance to secure tees and hoodies with keynote illustrations from Amy Tan and Keith Hansen.

~ Celebrating 2025 with Highlighted Successes ~

Your charitable support was vital to our mission and success this past year.
Thanks to your generosity, we continue to provide a critical voice for coastal Marin’s lands, waters, and biodiversity, and we were able to:

Release the Community Water Guide, empowering everyday Californians to become passionate water advocates and protectors of their local watersheds;

Pilot a first-of-its-kind survey to better understand how people experience and enjoy Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), informing future stewardship;

Train six passionate interns, equipping the next generation of environmental leaders with hands-on fieldwork experience and mentorship;

Keep our watersheds clean, preventing nearly 1,000 lbs. of trash and 100+ lbs. of recyclables from polluting creeks and shorelines with the help of 180+ dedicated volunteers;

Protect watershed health through ongoing water quality testing across the Seashore and advocating for consistent, Seashore-wide regulatory standards.

...and much more!

MISSION

To protect and sustain the unique lands, waters, and biodiversity of West Marin. We achieve this goal through advocacy, science, education, and engagement.

VISION

Protected resilient ecosystems in West Marin’s coastal communities
for current and future generations.

EQUITY & JUSTICE

We apply an equity lens to our guiding principles and work. We acknowledge how systemic, historical, and current social structures impact human relationships with our natural environment. We recognize that inequities and racism, past and present, result in reduced access to resources and increased environmental vulnerability. We are committed to evolving on an organizational level, expanding our program outreach, and broadening the voices and perspectives that drive our vision and policy work. The health of our environment thrives on ecological diversity, and the movement to protect it must be diverse and inclusive, which has not always been the case.
