Point Reyes National Seashore | General Management Plan Amendment

EAC is anticipating the release of the Point Reyes National Seashore’s (Seashore) General Management Plan Amendment (GMPA) Final Environmental Impact Statement (Final EIS) in the coming week. The Final EIS is one of the final steps by the Seashore in this process, where they will announce the Proposed Action. The Proposed Action will state their intentions for issuing long-term ranching leases and how they will ensure the protection of park resources.

Our work is driven by a focus on protecting the lands and waters of what we regard as one of the most beautiful landscapes on earth right here in West Marin. Our actions are grounded in our mission, values, and guiding principles that inform our decisions, strategies, and pathways to meet our stewardship goals.

With the GMPA Final EIS expected any day, the swirl of the online news ecosystem is full of different views, opinions, positions, and characterizations. Over the last few months, we have found a couple of references to EAC that have not accurately represented our position. EAC has remained steadfast in careful consideration of our actions, always keeping our eye on our ultimate goal of protecting the Seashore, a national treasure in Marin County’s backyard.

Point Reyes National Seashore | E-Bikes Policy Update

In April 2020, the National Park Service proposed a rule-making process to define “electric bicycle” (e-bikes) and establish rules for how e-bikes may be used throughout the National Park system. The rule would implement the August 2019 Secretary of the Interior Order 3376. EAC understands this rule-making process as intending to conduct the required NEPA review that should have been implemented in August 2019. Public Comments were due June 8, 2020. Unfortunately, we are concerned the NPS Proposed Rule to allow the use of e-bikes in all park units was issued without developing environmental review. Due to NPS’s failure to comply with NEPA, the Proposed Rule did not consider the full scope of negative impacts that e-bikes may cause to park resources, including visitation, wilderness areas, wildlife, and habitats.

Biodiversity | Report PG&E Vegetation Management Violations

It has come to our attention that Pacific Gas & Electric vegetation management crews have been dispatched throughout West Marin. If you witness inappropriate vegetation management that includes the removal of large trees or vegetation near riparian areas (creeks and wetlands) please report these violations to CalTIP at https://wildlife.ca.gov/Enforcement/CalTIP. You can also report the issue to EAC here.

Online Annual Membership Meeting |  June 25, 2020, 5pm-6pm

Typically June marks the time for us to come together at the Dance Palace over a potluck gathering to discuss member business, elect board members, share our latest work, hear from guest speakers, and honor our community with the Peter Behr Steward of the Land and Volunteer Awards. However, we are still working from home, and unable to gather in large groups, so we will host this event online this year. We will share our current work with you, introduce you to our expanded team, update you on how we will conduct board member elections, and finish with a happy hour trivia game. We hope to see you next week!

Don't forget to RSVP
When you RSVP you will receive a link to join the Zoom Meeting.
This event is open to current members of EAC.
