West Marin's Wild Oceans Webinar:
An Insider's Look into our
Marine Protected Areas &
Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10TH, 2020 | 1:30 PM - 2:30 PM

Join us online in celebration of World’s Ocean’s Day/Week on June 10th to learn about our amazingly diverse oceans due west of Marin County with the Environmental Action Committee of West Marin's Executive Director, Morgan Patton, and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary's Science Educator, Jennifer Stock.

We will kick off our GotoWebinar by celebrating Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in California and beyond! There is a growing movement to protect 30% of our oceans through an interconnected network of MPAs. Learn more about California's network of MPAs, and how you can get involved to preserve marine and coastal ecosystems now and into the future.

This will be followed by a special presentation on Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, including underwater footage of deep-sea features like sea corals, sponges and other invertebrate and vertebrate life.

Don’t miss this exciting chance to dive deep (roughly 10,885 feet!) with our speakers about our unique coastal waters and ask follow up questions.

The International Ocean Film Festival Presents World Ocean Day
Online Film Series

THURSDAY, JUNE 8TH-11th, 2020

This year, our friends at the the International Ocean Film Festival (IOFF) is observing World Oceans Day in support of #Love30x30 — a campaign to safeguard 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.

World Ocean Day Film Series consists of three virtual film screenings playing on or around June 8th. Each will be hosted by expert filmmakers and moderators, guiding us through an international exploration of learning more about our oceans and its inhabitants. We will dive into the remote atolls of French Polynesia, explore the rich marine ecosystems of the Galapagos, and meet the killer whales in the chilling waters of the remote Arctic.

Dedicated to using film as a medium to increase public awareness of the environmental, social, and cultural importance of marine ecosystems and foster a spirit of ocean stewardship, IOFF is now the premier venue in North America for ocean-related films.

Every year, IOFF produces an acclaimed festival of ocean-themed films from all over the world that are largely unavailable to the general public. Themes range from marine science and industry to sports and adventure. We look for films that entertain, educate, and encourage active participation in ocean conservation.

The West Marin region, of Marin County California is a part of a robust watershed, but its defining feature is the vast Pacific Ocean, which surrounds its shores. For thousands of years humans have depended on these rich waters, but with development, climate change, pollution, shifting political priorities, tourism and other factors impacting our environment, we remain fastidious in reviewing and researching issues important to our coastal communities.

Since 1971, EAC has been actively advocating for water protection from Dillon to Muir beaches, primarily in the Tomales Bay and Bolinas Lagoon watersheds. Our work is focused on bringing people, science and policy together to champion innovative solutions for local environmental problems and threats. For almost fifty years, we have worked on various projects to protect vital ecosystems, defend critical legislation, enforce accountability of leaders and legislators and rally our community to become stewards of their backyard because a healthy watershed and ocean means a healthy planet.

We actively engage in coastal protection policy work and climate change planning efforts through submitting comments, testifying, community engagement, and participating in stakeholder groups. Learn more with the links provided below, and take action by joining our member circle, renewing your annual member gift, or make a special contribution in honor of our ocean's today!
