Thank you for your interest in educating visitors at Duxbury Reef with EAC!
The Environmental Action Committee of West Marin (EAC), in collaboration with Marin County Parks and Open Space and a variety of individuals and organizations, is pleased to offer our volunteer training for tabling educators at Duxbury Reef State Marine Conservation Area, Agate Beach County Park.
Visitors come to Duxbury Reef to observe and learn about fascinating and incredibly diverse sea life that exists there, and to find deeper connection with our coast and ocean along the western edge of Marin County. Visitation inevitably has an impact on the reef (including by footsteps, handling, and taking), and not all visitors are aware of California MPA (Marine Protected Area) and other regulations in place, or of how they can best practice tidepooling to minimize their impact.
The purpose of the Volunteer Tabling Team is to help protect the health of Duxbury Reef through education from an informational table at the trailhead. Volunteers will engage with and educate visitors about the reef's rocky intertidal ecosystem, California's marine protected areas (MPAs) and tidepooling stewardship practices that align with the MPA regulations at Duxbury Reef State Marine Conservation Area (SMCA). As part of their service, tabling volunteers will also be asked to record the number of visitors and some information about their visitor engagement.
This 2.5-day training session will take place in January 2026 (see the dates below). This training will provide background and instruction, informative materials including a docent manual and Duxbury Species ID chart, and other program items needed for serving on shifts and coordinating with the team.
We are so glad of your interest in helping to protect the rocky intertidal sea life and habitat at Duxbury Reef! This volunteer opportunity will complement the visitor education provided by our Duxbury Docents on the reef, yet requires less of a commitment while also contributing to community education about this extraordinary environment.
VOLUNTEER TRAINING DATES INCLUDE ALL OF THE FOLLOWING:
"RAIN" DATES:

Table Team trainees are expected to attend each session date. The training days on the 9th and 17th will be 6-7 hours long and held both inside in a classroom setting and at Duxbury Reef. The shorter training on the 11th will be held at the trailhead to provide information on the tabling materials and volunteer protocols. Local experts in their field and guest speakers will instruct the classes.
Volunteers on the team will have access to team support and resources distributed during the training, and opportunities for enrichment sessions on relevant topics each year.
